A friend of mine was at the salon, when her hairdresser started talking about a high school PTA meeting in a growing middle class area, an outer suburb of Washington, D.C. The hairdresser said parents kept saying “Why can’t we be like the W-schools?” Speaker after speaker talked about the W-school wunderkinder.
For those of you who don’t drink the kool-aid, the W-schools are Walter Johnson, Walt Whitman, Winston Churchill, and Thomas S. Wootton high schools, all high performing schools in Bethesda and Potomac, Maryland. There are similar W-schools in Northern Virginia: Washington-Lee, Woodson, Woodlawn. (Sorry Yorktown and TJ, but you have to start with a W!)
Not only are the W-school students more academically gifted and better dressed, they have the Divine Right of Kings.
And they know what wunderkind means.
